E.R.A.S.E. with love

"Every action in our lives touches on some chord that will vibrate in eternity."

The first time I came across the words 'AIDS' and 'HIV' was when I took part in a science quiz in primary school, and learnt the full name of those two words - Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and Human Immunodeficiency Virus. HIV leads to AIDS, where a progressive failure of the human immune system occurs and develops life-threatening opportunistic infections.

I feel deeply sorry for the innocent HIV/AIDS patients who were genetically inherited with the disease. Besides having to bear with the reality of their immune system getting weaken by the viruses as days go by, the worst part is how they have to deal with the social stigma of the society around them. Instead of showering these ill people with love and words of encouragement, the society alienates and sets them apart from us, making these ill ones feel like they are different.

If there is one thing we could do, it would be to show our love and support for the people who are living with HIV or AIDS. The indifference of the society in caring for the people living with HIV/AIDS causes their will to live to wear away and makes them want to give up on life.  We should not run or hide when someone needs somebody. By getting to know the illness, we will realize the faults of the social stigma. Offering a hug to the people living with HIV/AIDS is NOT contagious, but instead it brings hope and acceptance to them. Togetherness brings hope, and hope gives them the strength to go on when it feels like nothing else works. We can bring a change to erase stigma and discrimination to HIV/AIDS.

World Aids Day falls on the 1st December of every year. This year, the Medical Society of the University of Malaya, together with Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) will be celebrating World AIDS Day on the 1st and 2nd of December 2012. The event 'E.R.A.S.E.' envisioned to eradicate stigma against people living with HIV/AIDS, and to educate the society and create awareness on HIV/AIDS. Do check out their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ERASEAIDS

WHAT CAN I DO?
The organizers have came out with postcards to raise fund for Malaysian AIDS Council in funding the aids given to people living with HIV/AIDS. A minimum donation of RM 10 will be collected for a set of 4 postcards, and if some of us could not afford the whole set, we could donate RM 3 for 1 postcard. The postcards also act as inspiration and support to those people, where the donors will write down their words of encouragement on the postcards, which will then be collected and sent back to the Malaysian AIDS Council and viewed by the HIV/AIDS patients in need of love and support.

If you guys are interested, do get the postcards from me or Yean See by this Friday, as we will be volunteering for the event on this coming Saturday and Sunday. And if you guys would like to volunteer as well, feel free to sign up on their facebook page and join us this weekend.

I sincerely hope that we as Team IX Members can each do a small part in contributing to this good cause. =)

"Act as if you do make a difference. Because it really does."

Sincerely,
Yvonne.

Food tasting and testing: myBurgerLab

These awesome photos were taken today, at myBurgerLab in Seapark, Petaling Jaya. Funny. The plan was for us to meet there at 5PM, where Yvonne will drive her car and YeanSee will be the passenger, me myself will drive another car from Bangi, and Darryl will come slighly later at 5.30 pm, driving his own car from Puncak Alam. It turned out that the first two cars, (Yvonne and I) was lost in Petaling Jaya area. While we were supposed to book the seats first and wait for Darryl according to the 5 pm plan, failed as we were waiting for Darryl for another reason:- to lead us to myBurgerLab in Seapark! LOL We were lost. Totally lost. We finally found the restaurant at 6 pm. That is an hour later according to plan.

I had no idea where I was. I know the way to get there but to find Seapark is very tricky. My earlier research using Google Maps and Wikipedia failed, but it had never failed me before.  My first landmark to get there, which was a roundabout, had recently been demolished and replaced with traffic lights. No wonder I got lost. I was searching for the roundabout! And after I couldn't trace the roundabout, everything seems not to make sense at all. Later, I hopped into Darryl's car, with Yvonne and Yeansee following through, browsed through iPad's map and we finally found myBurgerLab.

The location is not in downtown PJ. It's not even near Jaya One. It's somewhere in the neighbourhood, so:-

"If you want some, come get some" - John Cena

When we arrived the queue was long, but not as long as what I saw in myBurgerLab's photo in Facebook. In that photo the queue was dragged till the outside of the tiny restaurant. Today, the queue remained inside but the the restaurant is packed with hungry people. The atmosphere of the restaurant is not like any other restaurant. From outside I see the atmosphere resembles an open house. I also get the vision of the moment 5 minutes before Ramadhan's break fasting in restaurant, where everybody wants a seat! Back to the queue, if I'm not mistaken it took us 10 minutes to place our orders.

We were given index number or angka giliran just like any banks / post office. Our number was 72. The current number was 44. The waiting time was about half an hour. Then it's time to look for empty seats. It's not easy. It's so jammed pack with people, so imagine for yourself. Thank god a staff came in handy when he offered us to look for seats.

It's the drooling part now! The burgersssss. YeanSee ordered Spicy Hawaii chicken burger, while Yvonne ordered Chicken A+ burger. I took the recommendation of YeanSee by ordering 'The Beautiful Mess'. Darryl ordered "Kick In The Face" to the power of 2 burger. We decided to order 4 different burgers so we can try all four and decide on the one with the best taste. We ranked "Kick in the Face" the best because the patty is very juicy. *drooling now*. The Beautiful Mess came in second, A+ burger was downgraded to C due to it's performance that was ranked by us at number 3 and Spicy Hawaian came in last. Fries tastes good and we had bottemless soda.

One thing about eating the burgers here is that, it will get messy! I always wonder why must it get Messi, and not Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka or Robin Van Persie? LOL just kidding. So to tackle the messy issue, you need lotsa tissues. But hey the interior design was not messy at all. Designed to be simple, not size consuming, with spacious effect (white colour chosen) and unique mural, will at least decrease the tense inside the shop, urm looking for seats maybe? Haha. My favourite mural would be the chemistry's periodic-table: Version burger, it's out of the box. But the mural in the shape of burger is cute too. It's written "Hungry? Omnomnomnomnom this burger!".

So to wrap up the post, it was a nice experience trying a 'black burger', it's different, unique in it's own way AND it's nicer because somebody paid for it :) Come early, as early as 5 pm because the queue will start right away.

Nov--days

08.11.12
An unforgotten night.
I'm surprised for everything at that night.
I never expect that I got such a big group of good friends when I entered MMU.
(Everyone has their own stories before entered this path, you know I know.)

I was touched by the sincerity from everyone especially this awesome group- Team IX.
Before that, I felt very hilarious about the Team.( Don't kill me, Darryl.)
But, don't know since when, I started to feel proud to be with this team and started to spread it among my old friends.( All of them felt surprised and jealous with the Team:D)

Thanks for being a part of my university life.
:)

Yean See.

Pigs on power trips

It does seem that on occasion, you'd run into that stupid joke of a security guard who makes your "offense" out to be a lot worse than it is, as if s/he is attempting to extract the worst out of you. Sadly, I learnt that the hard way.

Today, between 11.45 am to 12.15 pm, after paying that semesterly trip to the ERU (you know what it was about), I was at FOE br 1023, derping by the pc, while simultaneously studying. All of a sudden, two of those uniform-wearing pigs storm in, ask whether I'm a lecturer or student (Huh? Since when do lecturers wear shorts, sports shoes, and t-shirts? You don't say?) and before I know it, they went on a tirade, speaking to me angrily as if I was caught in the act of some felony, when in reality, all I was doing was using the pc, nothing more. They continued haranguing me with their bullshit gibberish, and finally, one of them actually accused me of surfing for porn sites. (WHAT? That is RETARDED!) Alright, just because a webpage features female photos snapped from an angle which happens to emphasize ... specific female body parts, THAT CONSTITUTES PORN? Aw, c'mon, it's not MY fault that those beautiful female athletes and models have such perfectly shaped curves and notable bodies deserving of respect and acknowledgement of the male gender, whereas those two withered, shriveled pigs past their prime don't get cast more than a passing glance! Now they subject me to their moral trip, like I'm some vile, perverse sinner deserving of their god's judgement?

Left with no other option, I just got up, and prepared to leave. However, the matter didn't end there. When I strode out of the class, and was about to turn the corner to the exit of FOE, the more "morally-sound" of the two actually yelled "eeehhh!" like an uneducated pariah in an attempt to detain me like a wanted suspect. Then she demanded I hand over my Student ID to see my ID number (Oh, I see. Probably because it makes her feel like a cop of the law, dutifully clamping down hard on PERCEIVED criminals). I did so and she scrutinized it like crazy. Then she demanded my cell phone number. Fuming, I disclosed my personal detail to her, as each number spoken felt like a stab to the gut. When I was done, I demanded to know why she had to note my particulars. She claimed that it was so that she could compile a report, and submit that, apparently resulting in me receiving a warning. So, you're basically painting on yourself an illusion of competency, at MY expense? You taint MY record, all because you wanted some shitty raise or bonus? Whatever happened to ethics, or regards towards a human right for a fair trial?

I was shaken by that revelation. I felt so hurt and helpless, after the incident. I was so angry, worried and tormented by the horrible encounter with two insensitive pigs. Part of me had wanted to just bolt off at the sound of the pig yelling out like a mental patient to detain me, and to ignore her, but knowing that would just compound any disciplinary repercussion against me, I had to yield to their ego-fueled demands.

Shaken and traumatized, I just mindlessly walked all the way to FOM and sank in a bench. I tried to read that Cost Accounting Principles textbook purchased earlier that day, but all I could see was red. Feeling anger is bad enough, but add helplessness to the mix, and that feeling is the worst. I was utterly furious, but I knew I there was nothing I could do. I was powerless. Then, a friend passed by and said hi. Immediately, I poured out all my feelings and despair as she listened. Luckily, she seemed to understand my pain and helplessness, citing a somewhat similar case of one of HER friends falling prey to another security guard on yet another power trip, over what was an "offense" resulting in absolutely no damage or losses to on-campus property. He too ended up receiving a warning.  After she left to attend to her stuff, I hardened my resolve. I would try. I would attempt to appeal at the security unit, to somehow get my warning waived.

At 2.30 pm, I went down there, and was pointed the directions to the main security office. There, I meet a really kind and helpful lady, to whom I pleaded my case to. She contacted the security on duty in that area, to investigate. When she was done, she kindly told me to take a seat. I did so. Several minutes later, this jovial, humorous guy came in and told me to relate my case. I poured out everything to him, citing that my "offense" did not result in any damages or loss of property, and  how much I feared my disciplinary record would be tarnished as a result. I also commented how students should only be subject to disciplinary actions IF their actions truly inconvenienced or endangered others or property. He laughed at my comment, saying no true "record" would be on the student's book. Instead, for offenses resulting in fines, they would merely be barred from receiving their graduation certificates until said fines were settled. The other, he said, were police cases in which the offenders would be hauled off to the nearest police depot. For most part, I had nothing to fear about my case. He even assured me that I could contact him, should I find myself between a rock and a hard place.

I thanked them and left, feeling truly liberated. They were really kind and helpful, the lady even joking, "kasihan dia", in an affectionate tone (lol). Damn, when I heard that, I felt like I was still in the 5th grade, and not in university. Damn (lol). Anyway, I met up with a few more friends, before I attended my new class, squash, at 4.00 pm to 5.30 pm. My day somehow brightened up.

Of course, any decent person would understand that those security guards had jobs to do, and duties to uphold, but where were the tact, discretion, and respect in the course of duty? Why were they so quick to jump to conclusions? Why did they talk in an angry manner? Why did they not evaluate my actions, on whether or not it had caused damages or losses of property, instead of instantaneously branding me a "problem" student? Assuming it were true that my actions really did incur damages or losses of property, then yes, go ahead and subject me to any disciplinary action you deem befitting my crime. But in this case, would it be THAT hard to just exercise some discretion, tell me to cease my operating that PC, and to be on my way? In any case, I wonder why those kind of people are even allowed employment as security guards. It's chilling to know that we're at the mercy of those thugs, bullies and pigs. Pigs I say, not because they're security, but because they're giving otherwise decent students a hard time. Please understand. I'm not an unreasonable or unfair person. I just feel wronged, and I want to vent my feelings.

Needless to say, though, some security guards are genuine employees who are truly committed of their duty to protect and serve, to ensure a safe learning environment. They are the ones who should be recognized, commended and promoted for their effort and commitment.

Anyone else had a similar experience of being unfairly treated at the hands of scum like that? If so, don't worry, you're not alone. Comments are welcome.
